"No company is in business for long before the mail starts bringing invitations to join various groups. There are associations today dealing with every aspect of business life, from trade and lobbying groups to sector-specialized associations. While joining every organization that comes along is not a good use of either time or money, some associations do offer tangible benefits, and you should consider them carefully.
There are a number of broadly based business organizations in Ontario, Chambers of Commerce (local, provincial and national), The Retail Council of Canada and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The Canadian and Ontario Chambers of Commerce and their community affiliates offer the most immediate benefits to all sizes of businesses.
In Ontario, over 200 local Chambers are affiliated with the Ontario Chamber, and across Canada there are over 500 local chambers affiliated through the Canadian Chamber. The different levels cooperate, exchange information, and offer co-operative group incentives and pass these on through their members.
Local Chambers of Commerce do much more than exchange information. They offer educational programs business services, and are involved in local issues from tourist promotion to lobbying local government on issues of concern to the business community. They are the most broadly based of any business group. Membership fees vary, depending on the size of the company involved, but for the average business, Chambers of Commerce membership is generally a good investment."
